LWVMA Adopts New Position on Charter Schools

The League of Women Voters of Massachusetts has published its new position on Charter Schools, following a two-year state-wide study in which local Leagues, including the Amherst League, participated.

The new position supports strong state oversight of charter schools, ensuring accountability as well as cooperation and collaboration between charter and district schools. The League believes that the state should continue to regulate the number and locations of charter schools. It believes that charter schools should be established only on a non-profit basis, with community and parent/guardian participation in their governance, including on their boards of trustees. Funding should not disadvantage either district or charter schools.
