Voter Registration: In June, 2014, Judy and Marcie held a “kick off” Voters Registration Meeting at Marcie’s house. Twelve people came and we enjoyed an energy filled training on how to run a Voters Registration Table. Then we brainstormed about places events where we can do tabling, and started to sign up for specific times and places. A “sign up genius” was used for coordinating some of the scheduling.
The season began with the Naturalization Ceremony at the Northampton Courthouse where 50 people became US citizens. We passed out almost 50 forms and 8 came back to us, signed by new citizens. Later that day, League volunteers were at the Amherst July 4th Fireworks.
Some of the other venues for tabling were: Amherst Farmers Market, Wal-Mart, Maple Farm Market, the Town Common for Trash to Treasures and First Day (put on by the Schools prior to the beginning of the school year), the annual NAACP Picnic, The Boulders Apartments, Global Cuts Barber Shop, Bub’s Barbeque, and the well attended Amherst Block Party. On National Voter Registration Day, we had an amazing presence in Amherst Center, tabling in front of the Typewriter Store, Bangs Center, and Jones Library, as well as Campus Center at UMass. More recently, we tabled at the African American Achievement Awards and the Latino Achievement Awards.
We had a wonderful experience collaborating with other groups in the effort to register voters, namely the NAACP and Youth Action Coalition. We also did tabling and election overview at the Amherst Survival Center.
At election time, we distributed 100 flyers to remind folks of the registration deadline and to vote on Nov. 4th. Our slogan is LWV’s Promotes the Vote! Our educational efforts and visibility are immeasurable; our (known) voter registration form total is 94.
Candidate’s Night: We had an excellent turn out for Candidates Night this spring, especially given that there was only one contested race (and that was with a write-in candidate!). Nancy Eddy was an excellent Moderator and some new League members helped out with questions and timing during the event. It was televised by Amherst Media.
Live Election Night Coverage: Amherst Media was buzzing with League volunteers collecting election results from poll runners, our own Judy Brooks and Tony Maroulis as hosts, and many candidates coming by to be congratulated on the air. We were a well-oiled machine! This, too, can be seen on Amherst Media’s web site.
All told, a successful and FUN Voter Service season! Thanks to all who helped make it happen! Voter Service volunteers are the best! Please join us again in the upcoming year for more fun and effective voter registration. We will keep you posted.
