Last date to apply for absentee ballot, or to vote at the Town Clerk's office (in-person absentee voting) for September 4 elections: Friday, August 31. Download request for absentee ballot.
The town of Amherst is looking for poll workers for this important election. Workers must be registered to vote in Massachusetts, but not necessarily in Amherst. They are paid $11/hour and must attend a training, to be scheduled.
Primary election: Tuesday, September 4
The Republican ballot in Amherst will include federal and statewide offices. No Republicans have filed for the open Massachusetts House or Senate seats. The Democratic ballot will also include Democratic candidates for these seats. Note that three of the four Democratic candidates for the Hampshire-Franklin-Worcester Senate seat are write-in candidates. Unenrolled voters (those who are not registered with any party) may choose either ballot.
More information about candidates for the various offices is at the Secretary of the Commonwealth's web site.
Preliminary election for Amherst Town Council: Tuesday, September 4
This is a non partisan election. Ballots are specific to the Council District of the voter. The preliminary election will identify four candidates to run for the two Council seats in each district, as well as six at-large candidates to run for the three at-large Council sets in the general election in November. This first Town Council will serve for three years, until the end of 2021. Future Town Councils will be elected to two-year terms in odd-numbered years, along with other Town officials such as the School and Library Boards. Details of the structure of the new local government and the transition process can be found in the Amherst Home Rule Charter.
The Town Council Districts are:
- District 1 (2 seats): Precincts 1 and 3 (note: only four candidates have filed for the two District 1 Council seats)
- District 2 (2 seats): Precincts 2 and 6
- District 3 (2 seats): Precincts 4 and 10
- District 4 (2 seats): Precincts 5 and 9
- District 5 (2 seats): Precincts 7 and 8
- At-large (3 seats): All precincts
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Polling places and District maps.
