Book Sale 2016: Your help is needed!

Dear League Members,

Our annual Book Sale will be much different this year. We will not be on the Town Common under a big white tent for our sale. And we are not having it in May, as we have traditionally done. We have tried to streamline and make it easier for our members to help out. And we are partnering with the Amherst-Pelham Regional School District to move this annual event towards being a community tradition.

The 2016 Book Sale will be held at Fort River Elementary School at 70 South East Street. We will have the sorting, pricing and sales all at the same place this year -- in the Fort River school gymnasium. No more packing, taping, lifting and moving books. No more pricing each book; we will have standardized options. No penciling in the amounts or even using the colored dots except for special books. No lifting and moving books around to various rooms and locations. It is going to be MUCH easier for all our volunteers!

Here's the schedule of events:

  • June 20 through July 20: Accepting book donations at the Fort River School and at Stop and Shop.
  • June 27 through July 23: Pricing and sorting at the Fort River School, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • July 25: Young Reader's Day, noon to 4 p.m. at the Fort River School.
  • July 27: Dealers' Day, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fort River School. $10 admission fee.
  • July 28-30 and August 4-6, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Book sale open to the public at the Fort River School. No admission fee.

We need everyone’s help!

For our NEWER MEMBERS who may not have helped in the past: this is our BIG ANNUAL EVENT in the community. It is something that builds a lot of camaraderie and we have LOTS of fun. You don't have to know anyone or know much about selling books to get involved. We will train you when you arrive to help out. You just need to sign up to help out for a few hours now and then. You will get to know some wonderful people in the League (and you will get first dibs on books too!). We do a lot of laughing at our Book Sale preparation and sale. So, jump right in -- ”the water’s fine!”

As always, there will be assorted on-line sign-up forms for the major jobs to be done: collecting donated books from Stop and Shop, sorting and arranging the books ready for sale, and cashiering and reshelving during the sales weeks. It is simple to sign up and you will get reminders via email when your volunteer job is coming up.

There are also a couple of special jobs for which we need volunteers. First, we need helpers for our Young Reader's Day on July 25. Contact any member of the organizing committee, below, to volunteer. And secondly, we are forming a separate team to cull and evaluate books -- rare books, nice picture books, etc. -- that do not fit our standard pricing criteria. Contact Janet Williams if you are willing to be a member of this team, for which special training will be arranged.

We need our members to make this a success. And you don’t have to work often unless -- like a lot of us -- you just love being around books!
