The League of Women Voters is co-sponsoring a panel discussion on the ballot question about raising the cap on Charter Schools. The forum is planned for the evening of October 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room N151 of the new Integrative Learning Center on the campus of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
Question 2 on the November ballot, if passed, would authorize the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to approve up to 12 new charter schools, or enrollment expansions in existing charter schools, per year.
The expert panelists will be
- Barbara Madeloni, President of the Massachusetts Teachers Association,
- William Diehl, Executive Director of the Collaborative for Educational Services,
- Marc Kenen, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Charter Public Schools Association, and
- Julia Mejla, parent of a student at the Brooke Charter School in Boston.
In addition, there will be a media panel composed of Stan Moulton of the Gazette, Stephanie Slysz of WHMP, and Kelsey Kenny and Serena McMahon of the University of Massachusetts. An initial round of questions will come from these panelist, followed by questions collected from members of the audience and vetted by UMass students.
The Hampshire Gazette is arranging this forum, together with a number of other local news organizations, the UMass Journalism Department, and the League of Women Voters. The event, which is free and open to the public, will also be broadcast live on WHMP, NCTV, and the Gazette and Recorder web sites.
