Affordable Housing in Amherst

If you own your home in Amherst, the neighborhood around you may see more student rentals.

If you are a family with school-age children, the opportunities to become a homeowner or renter at an affordable cost, will continue to be slim.

If you are an older adult and want to downsize, there may not be an affordable place within the community to do so.

Unless Town Council makes major changes, the future is not optimistic.

The Amherst League of Women Voters, along with the Amherst Affordable Housing Trust and other organizations, organized a meeting to discuss the need for affordable housing in the community, the challenges faced by developers, and potential solutions such as the implementation of a 40R Overlay District and the use of panelized construction. The meeting also highlighted the importance of public subsidy, the need for more middle-income housing, and the challenges faced by the housing voucher program. The discussion concluded with an emphasis on the need for local policies and developments in the region, and the importance of community involvement in advocating for affordable housing.
