Prior Civic Action Grants

Here are some of our recent grant recipients.

  • Feminist Generation Amherst (https://amherstfemgen.wixsite.com/website) is the local chapter of a national, youth-led organization fighting for intersectional gender equality and bodily autonomy for all. We are honored to receive a League of Women Voters Civic Grant to launch our campaign for youth voter engagement in the October 2026 midterm elections. Our project consists of pre-registering those at 16 at driving schools, a public awareness campaign, and a social media campaign featuring a soon to be launched “Get Out to Vote Olympics”.

The Amherst Mobile Market (AMM) is a community driven, multi-lingual, mobile, farmers market that transports and delivers high-quality, fresh, affordable, local, and culturally desirable foods to Amherst communities challenged by poor food access and limited income. The AMM operates in USDA designated "food deserts," that are also low income and majority BIPOC. Fresh produce is discounted at just above wholesale prices in recognition of the limited financial resources of families in the communities we serve.

The LWV grant has paid for the purchase of six Pocketalk instant voice translators.

Two translators will be available for use at each of three Markets -- one at the sales point and one at the payment point. We expect that the translators will significantly improve communications and honor the many languages spoken by our customers and volunteers.

  • 2025 - $500

The Amherst Basketball Club (Amherst Regional High School) which is dedicated to encouraging and empowering students, particularly girls, to get involved in sports and extracurricular activities. The program was especially focused on motivating girls to join more sports, fostering a sense of confidence, teamwork, and leadership.

The grant covered the costs associated with her research and public seminar on the history of efforts to mobilize the Black vote and the role deep canvassing can play in increasing voter turnout. She produced a community toolkit that includes step-by-step guides, sample scripts, and adaptable strategies to help grassroots organizations train volunteers and effectively engage voters. The resource is intended to empower community leaders to replicate these methods and sustain voter engagement beyond a single election cycle.

In recent years many young voters have become so discouraged by our political divisions that an alarming number are considering not participating in this November’s election.  Both Creative Collective for the Public Interest and its sister non-profit, Creative Collective for Issue Advocacy, produce video PSA’s for distribution on social media. These spots are placed as ads and micro-targeted to the audience that needs to hear the message. While the two organizations have to this point focused on climate change education and on individual political races, the sole focus this year is on encouraging young people to vote with a campaign of 30-second video PSA’s targeted to college campuses. This non-partisan project will involve short interviews with several categories of subjects: high school history teachers talking about the importance of voting and how it feels knowing that former students of theirs are considering sitting out the election; new citizens talking about the experience of voting as Americans for the first time; and refugees from non-democracies talking about the privilege of voting in free and fair elections.
