Empowering voters

Defending democracy

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation, at the local, state, and national levels. The Amherst League was founded in 1939.

How to Run for Office

The LWV of Amherst believes that all residents are well served when elections for local office are contested, leading to a choice for voters. The League supports diverse perspectives as fundamental to a responsible and representative government.

This Candidates’ Guide is a supplement to the information found on the Amherst Town website and the Massachusetts State Office of Campaign and Political Finance (OCPF) website. It is intended to help anyone interested in serving the Town in an elective position.

This document was revised for the Fall, 2025 election cycle.

Ways to get involved

Judy Brooks Series

The Racial Justice Committee hosts an online conversation series named for Judy Brooks, long-time member of LWV Amherst and active citizen of the Town of Amherst. Originally this series was identified as part of LWVA's tradition of "brown bag lunches" (bring your own lunch!) to discuss matters of concern to the Amherst Community. It was renamed in April 2022.
